What is Web3?#
Let's first look at the concept of the web.
WEB1
It begins with the development of computers in the 1950s. Initial designs of packet networks were formed in various laboratories in the USA, UK and France.
One of the networking efforts supported by the US Department of Defense in the early 60s was ARPANET, the first network to use Internet Protocol (IP). The first message over ARPANET was sent from Professor Leonard Kleinrock's lab at the University of California (UCLA) in Los Angeles to a computer at the Stanford Research Institute (ISR).
In the late 1980s, Tim Berners-Lee from England made progress in integrating enriched text documents into a working network system, thanks to his work on the World Wide Web.This development marked the birth of the modern internet.
Beginning in the mid-1990s, the world wide web, with its instant messaging, e-mail, VoIP, video calls and discussion forums, blogs, social networks and online shopping sites, revolutionized our culture and society. He worked at CERN (European Nuclear Research Center) established in Switzerland on August 23, 1991
When we look at the details written above, the birth of the web also means the birth of Web1. In Web1, internet users could only see the messages and images on the relevant site, but could not take any action. In a sense, one-sided communication.
WEB2
This concept is a word that was first used by O'Reilly Media in 2004. With the developing internet, it means two-sided (mutual communication) communication where people can interact and communicate with each other and with websites (projects). With the proliferation of many social media platforms, this communication area has grown a lot. Platforms such as Youtube-Twitter-Facebook-Twitch-Instagram-Tiktok have created a communication model where people can easily communicate with each other and with projects (playing games, texting, sharing videos and pictures, trading) and even earning good money. However, with this model, different problems began to emerge. Obligation to use different username or password for each platform (for security), Unauthorized use of personal information.
Especially big companies and projects, along with the developing technology, have started to use the communications on the web2 for their own benefit and to earn a profit from them. They started collecting information from internet users and making advertisements in the light of this information. They carried out marketing activities under the name of the consumer's footprint. For example, imagine that you are searching for any product on google and you are logging into another site, and on that site, the advertisement of the product you have just searched on google appears. Projects obtain this information by using various artificial intelligence and technologies and use it for their own interests. In a sense, they make money by using people's information. It's not limited to just that. When you become a member of any site (game-trade-social media, etc.), your future is at the initiative of the site or project owner. You are in no way in control. Because of such problems, the governments of many developing countries have begun to pass laws on the protection of consumer information. To summarize, mutual communication is very strong, but we are not in control.
WEB3
Although the term was first coined by ethereum co-founder Gavin Wood, it gained popularity in 2020 and 2021. Web3 is a revolutionary set of ideas based on blockchain technologies, focused on decentralization and advocating personal control of personal information and property rights.
Defi-Nft-Metaverse-Dao are prime examples.
Recently, many technology giants have invested in different web3 projects and continue to do so. We see that global brands make serious investments, especially in the fields of nft and metaverse. Web3 projects have brought many innovations for users. Decentralized finance, on-chain applications related to the protection of personal information, nft developments and sales that benefit artists, customizable social media platforms and community preferences, participation in events in metaverse projects and winning awards, prizes in P2E and similar projects.P2E is the best example of axie infinity. When we examine the country-based distribution of the players, the Filipino players take the lead with 40.53% and they make serious gains.
With Web3, we can log in to many platforms with a single wallet address or ens name, we can easily trade the artworks we like (nft) We can communicate with private e-mail addresses, we can even create or join communities according to certain criteria. (Dao) We can perform many transfers without intermediaries or we can borrow and lend.(Defi) We can also add many features.
Web3 has some risks just like any other web application. The problem of complete decentralization, hacking risks, cybercrime, violent discourse and immoral behavior. However, I think that these risks will be minimized with the developing technology and software.
In a nutshell: Strong communication-decentralization and we are in control*
What awaits us in the web3 field in the next years?
As you know, there is high inflation and unequal income distribution throughout the world. Due to the wrong monetary policies and so-called security concerns of the country's governments, the prices of many commodities have increased, and this has been reflected to all consumers as inflation and will continue to be reflected. Our income will never increase at the rate of inflation and we will get poorer every day. But I am not pessimistic, because every crisis creates an opportunity. To me, this opportunity is the world of web3. Central banks of many countries are doing serious research on printing and using digital money. This will provide serious growth especially in the field of defi. In addition, I think that many banking and financial institutions will make investments in the field of defi in order to minimize the increasing operational costs. I think that people will contribute to their personal development and income by using web3 platforms more actively. Many web3 projects provide free training for web3 in different fields. These will contribute to both the growth of the sector and the development of many people and their orientation to different professions. In addition, thanks to projects that produce many innovations, it becomes much easier for users to produce a lot of content. I think we will see areas where people produce more content or software, interact and trade more. We will see that many metaverse projects will develop at an advanced level, while navigating the metaverse world, attending concerts, shopping and even placing our food orders through the contact points to be created in this area, we will receive them in real life. We will create and sell digital arts, make money by playing games, support our virtual and real world by participating in daoes. We will be able to record many of our activities on the chain. We will see that our need for social media platforms such as Google Twitter and similar social media platforms will decrease. Above all, we will experience true freedom. Let's support web3 construction together. Do not be afraid and do not hesitate. Learn-earn- teach.
